When students become juniors, they are eligible to take classes through the Career & College Promise program. These classes are offered through Surry CC at no cost to the student. Enrichment OpportunitiesNow is the time to learn more about yourself and develop skills that will help you be successful later in life. Volunteer in the community. Participate in an internship. Take on a part-time job. Sign up for an elective class that sparks your interest. There are also free and low-cost programs available to develop your interests and strengths. ASU's Anatomy & Physiology Summer Camp The Appalachian State University Department of Health, Leisure and Exercise Science offers an intense and rewarding summer residential or day camp experience in Anatomy and Physiology! This one-week camp will provide high school students with hands-on experience studying the major organ systems of the body, as well as discussion about diseases and injuries that affect these systems. There are no prerequisites except a strong interest in the sciences and adequate science and math background to understand the labs and lectures. After each full day of exploration in the Science of Anatomy and Physiology, evening group activities are offered under the supervision of the college-student counselors. Click HERE for more information. ASU's Forensic Science Summer Camp Appalachian State University is pleased to offer a summer residential camp experience in Forensic Anthropology! Set in the mountains of western North Carolina, on the beautiful campus of Appalachian State University, this one-week camp will provide high school students 15-18 years of age with hands-on experience in forensic analysis of the human skeleton. Click HERE for more information. ASU's Martha Guy Summer Institute MGSI is held every July for three weeks. Students will spend the first two weeks on the Appalachian State campus learning about business and developing professional skills. Among the activities is a group project that involves developing a business plan. Each group presents its plan to a panel at the end of the first two weeks. The final week will be spent on an exploratory trip to Washington D.C. and New York City. Although this program is costly, scholarships are available for qualifying students. NC A&T's Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP) College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences RAP is a two-week day program for current high school juniors and seniors. Its main objective is to stimulate interest in careers in the food, agricultural, environmental, family and consumer sciences. In addition to spending two weeks on North Carolina A&T's campus and the opportunity to engage in scholarly activities, students will receive $1000 if they enroll at NC A&T after high school. The program pays room, board, health and accident insurance, and activity fees. Click HERE for more information. NC A&T Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders (IFAL) This is co-sponsored by the North Carolina Farm Bureau and is a week-long program in June to build leadership potential in rising seniors who are interested in agriscience professions. NC State's Summer Textile Exploration Program The College of Textiles Summer Textile Exploration Program consists of four one-week sessions for rising high school seniors. Up to 30 students per week are chosen based on their academic success, extracurricular activities and their interest in NC State and science-related fields. Participants will live in one of NC State’s residence halls, all of which are equipped with air conditioning, refrigerators and microwaves. Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics This is a four-week residential program for sophomores and juniors interested in science and math. Students are assigned to one of six UNC campuses and can select studies in a specialized area of math or science. Governor's Page Program This is a one-week internship in Raleigh’s Office of the Governor for students ages 16 – 18. Students must be in good academic standing. Applications are accepted year-round, and participants are given a $150 stipend. Students are encouraged to do this program during the summer months rather than miss school. Click HERE for more information. WFU Baptist Medical Center Volunteen Program Each year, WFU Baptist Medical Center accepts applications from high school students for their Summer Volunteen Program. Students who are interested in medical careers and who are willing to commit to a long-term summer experience are encouraged to attend. The application can be found online and the program is competitive. Immersion in health career fields are difficult to obtain and this is a great opportunity to gain experience and knowledge. NC State's Design Camp Design Camp is an annual series of pre-college summer programs offered at NC State University College of Design to high school and middle school students who are interested in design. Design Camp informs students about college study in design and raises awareness of the impact of design in all aspects of our everyday lives. The skills in design thinking and creative experience gained at Design Camp can empower students on their path toward becoming innovative problem solvers and prepare them to tackle the challenges of the future. North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics The North Carolina School of Science & Mathematics (NCSSM) is a residential high school for Juniors and Seniors and is free to students who are accepted for their residential or online program. UNC Chapel Hill's Project Uplift Summer Program Project Uplift is a special program that enables high-achieving rising seniors to experience college life on the Carolina campus. Students spend two days visiting classes, meeting with faculty and staff, interacting with Carolina students, and participating in cultural and social activities. There is a nonrefundable $25 program fee which covers all meals, housing, t-shirt, and program materials. Project Uplift is designed for students from underrepresented populations such as American Indians, African Americans, Hispanic/Latinos, and Asian Americans. We also welcome prospective first-generation college students and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Students should be academically motivated, rank in the top 20% of their class, be enrolled in a curriculum that includes AP course(s), foreign language, and advanced mathematics. Click HERE for more information. NC A&T Advancing Mathematics & Science Skills Program (AMASS) For rising high school juniors and seniors with a GPA of 2.8 or higher. Program Cost: $100.00 program fee. Program Objectives: 1) Live on campus for two weeks, 2) SAT preparation in Mathematics, Reading and Writing, 3) Workshops in test-taking skills and college applications, 4) Scientific exploration projects integrating mathematics in the study of scientific problems, 5) Individual Academic/Career Planning – receive coaching in goal-setting for high school, undergraduate, graduate and career planning, and 6) Networking with like-minded students. CAMP Med: Wake Forest School of Medicine The program’s aim is to identify 10-15 9th through 12th grade high school students who have an interest in a health career and academic potential for a career in the health sciences. The goal of Camp Med is to identify a diverse group of students interested in health careers. Camp MED is a one-week day camp designed to recruit, educate, and prepare high school students for careers in the health professions. Health Careers Institute at Dartmouth The Health Careers Institute at Dartmouth is offered during July and August for high school students who have expressed an interest in working in health care or want to know more about clinical and non-clinical health careers. Students entering grades 10, 11, and 12 who want to learn about careers and important issues and topics in health care today, are encouraged to apply. Click HERE for more information. Poultry Science Summer Experience at NC State The summer institute is a five-day, four-night conference and workshop designed to broaden the high school student's understanding of the educational disciplines, scholarship opportunities, careers and industries related to poultry science. Students must list as a reference a high school science teacher, counselor, county extension agent, 4H leader or vocational agriculture instructor. Students must also submit a personal statement describing their interest in attending. The cost of the conference is $50.00, which includes lodging on campus, all meals, field trips, workshop materials, and entertainment. Click HERE for more information. Summer Youth Business and Entrepreneurship Academy (SYBEA) The summer institute is a residential program held on the campus of NC Central University. The Academy is open to high-achieving rising 10th, 11th and 12th grade students, with a "B" average or higher. Selected students will receive business training and exposure to higher education on the campus of NCCU, along with a full scholarship to cover the cost of attendance plus materials. NCCU’s SYBEA includes lectures, corporate visits, business plan development and a case competition with the goal of preparing the next generation of business leaders. Click HERE for more information. Co-Op Leadership Camp Each summer, the Cooperative Council of North Carolina sponsors a FREE week-long, overnight leadership camp for rising 10th, 11th, and 12th Graders at White Lake, NC. The camp features energetic and interactive workshops and presentations, outdoor recreation, leadership development, team building activities, and small group sessions with an emphasis on how cooperatives operate. Science And Technology Enriching Lifelong Leadership in Tomorrow's Endeavors (SATELLITE) at NC State SATELLITE is an exciting five-day adventure in May at NCSU for selected high school sophomores. During the program, SATELLITE scholars are exposed to a wide range of NCSU's science and technology resources while exploring future educational and career opportunities. Scholars also get a feel for the college experience -- living in student dorms, attending lectures, hands-on laboratories, and interactive demonstrations led by faculty and staff, and participating in various cultural and enrichment activities. Summer High School Transportation Institute at NC A & T This four-week program is packed full of fun and educational activities, including guest speakers, group projects, and trips, and designed to be a bonding, rewarding, and even life-changing experience for young minds. STI is free and introduces students to the educational paths and fields of transportation and supply chain and the many lucrative careers available.
